Undertaking work experience in Australia

There is no specific visa for undertaking work experience in Australia but this is possible under the Training and Research (Subclass 402) Visa – Occupational Trainee Stream which came into effect in November 2012.

The Occupational Trainee Stream is for people who need training to enhance their skills in their current occupation, area of study or field of expertise.

There are important conditions attached to this visa. You must:

  • be sponsored by an Australian organisation or government agency
  • be nominated by an approved sponsor for a particular position
  • be at least 18 years of age
  • be seeking to undertake the nominated training in Australia
  • have a sufficient level of English
  • meet health and character requirements.

There is an important three step process in applying for this visa, as follows:

  1. Your sponsor should lodge a sponsorship application
  2. Your sponsor needs to lodge a nomination for your position
  3. Once the above two steps are completed, you then lodge your visa application.

You can apply for this visa by paper application only and a non-refundable visa application charge will apply. Click here for the Application Form and the Application Document Checklist.

You must lodge the application for the Occupational Trainee Stream by mail with the Specialist Temporary Entry Centre (South Australia).
